Process Control Engineer

Process Control Engineer - Automation Engineer
Industrial plant operations including mechanical, electrical and automation knowledge in low and medium voltage AC/DC systems.
  • Setup, maintenance, calibration and interconnectivity of precision instruments, meters, analyzers, scanners, and other control/monitoring devices.
  • Ability to analyze problems, learn how devices work, determine root causes, implement solutions safely, effectively and document work performed.
  • Interpret complex technical/electrical solutions into plain-English knowledgebase articles and how-to guides for local plant maintenance personnel.
  • Quickly ascertain the aspects of plant operations by communicating with other engineers, production, and management personnel to develop an expert level understanding.
  • Eagerness to self-develop and expand personal knowledge in automation systems such as emerging DCS/PLC technologies, Industrial Cybersecurity, Virtualization, Augmented Reality, Big Data Integration / Historian Systems and IIoT (Industry 4.0).

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:
Required Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience  
Required College Degree, vocational/technical certification with an industrial/automation focus, or equivalent experience required.   Electrical or Industrial Engineering degrees preferred.

Basic Requirements
  • Must have a full understanding of industrial electricity including but not limited to all NEC allowable practices applicable to Low and Medium Voltages, strict adherence to NFPA 70/70B/70E and IEEE 1584 along with applicable corporate policies such as:
  • Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out / Proper Electric PPE (Cardinal Rule)
  • Energized Electrical (Hot Work) Permits
  • Shock Protection Boundaries, Arc Flash/Blast Specific Training
  • Extensive experience working in industrial environments with motors/actuators, electrical switchgear, generators, transformers, motor controls/variable frequency drives, instrumentation/measurement devices, semi-automatic or fully automated instruments such as relays, smart relays, logic controllers and distributed controls.
  • Ability to read, interpret, understand, mark-up and author functional descriptions, control narratives, one-line electrical diagrams, process, and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), cause and effect diagrams, ladder logic, function blocks, schematics, and CAD Drawings.
  • Possesses an advanced understanding of electrical controllers (DCS/PLC/PAC), including how to read/write/edit logic using IEC 61131-3 languages (Ladder, FBD, Structured Text) with a command of program scan time, timers, interlocks, latches, control loops and conditional statements affecting electrical inputs/outputs.
  • Has at least basic project management experience, including leading project meetings with contractors and tradesmen, keeping a project schedule and being accountable for a project budget (complete/partial), emphasizing and detailing job safety requirements.    Individuals seeking project management hours toward PMP certification highly preferred.

Technical Knowledge
  • Advanced understanding of automated controls systems including discrete and analog inputs/outputs, variable frequency drive parameters, instrumentation/analyzer inputs and configuration.  Experience with Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley devices, software and controls strongly preferred (PLC5, SLC500, Control/Compact/Guard Logix 5000, SMC, Power Flex Drive Hardware and PlantPAx / FactoryTalk SE / VantagePoint / OSI PI Historian software).
  • At a minimum an intermediate understanding of industrial ethernet networking in the operational technology (OT) space, including the Purdue model, configuration of managed switches, vLANs, routing protocols, fiber/copper network medium (termination, technical limitations, and proper implementation).  Experience with CPwE configurations, Cisco, and Allen Bradley Stratix switches strongly preferred.   
  • Extensive experience with MODBUS / HART / Profibus / RS-232 RS-485 / ControlNet / DeviceNet / EthernetIP communication between control and field devices.   Experience with OPC UA / DA communications strongly preferred.
  • At least a basic understanding of virtualization technology, how to deploy, maintain and mount virtual machines.   Previous experience with VMWare vSphere, Workstation and ESXi strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience racking and configuring servers, switches, UPS, and fiber/copper patch panels in Industrial Data Enclosures highly preferred.
  • Experienced with point-to-point verification (loop checks) and other electrical testing regimes related to troubleshooting commissioning efforts.
  • Experience with mining facilities and knowledge of kiln, burner management systems, material handling, weighing/loadout systems preferred.
  • Collaboration and Documentation
  • Provides exact technical details, capture field data, and remotely collaborate with Automation, Maintenance and Process Engineers to troubleshoot and repair a variety of electronic instrumentation and control systems.
  • Maintain meticulous work records including equipment specific records, incident ticket notes and weekly reports.
  • Read, write, and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, standard operating procedures, electrical drawings, maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Able to create presentations, schedule/run regular interval meetings to interact with plant/production managers, regional directors, and other departments such as Process, Maintenance and Continual Improvement regarding business needs, pain points and automation projects effectively.


Physical Demands:
  • Ability to travel 60% to plant sites within the US/Canada; must respond to and address callouts/emergencies after regular business hours in the event of production down scenarios.
  • Ability to work successfully in stressful situations and manage multiple tasks.
  • Tolerate working outside in adverse weather conditions as well as exposure to extreme high or low temperatures, noise, and dust.
  • Ability to follow all safety requirements, including company policies, site specific instructions, MSHA requirements and federal, state, and local safety and sanitary laws/requisites.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 120 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
